Peter Nicholls

A business is a corporate legal entity - impersonal, unfeeling, a creation of the world of economics. It is neither fair nor unfair. It works on facts alone in a work-centred environment. The world's economy depends on successful business.

Business however relies on human endeavour. People are emotional (often irrational) beings, having feelings, hopes and desires. For generations people accepted that success required them to centre life around their work. Now that attitude is irrevocably changing. Quality of life is a high priority, with people working to live, rather than living for work.

This has put the business world in a quandary. How does an economic rationalist corporate world continue to prosper when its people pursue higher ideals than simply to work (important though work still is)? There is a need to harmonise the aims of business with the personal aims of its workers.

We can only help managers who help themselves, who see their people as:

  • the secret to the company's sustained corporate health
  • 24/7 human beings, not just work robots

For business to succeed, managers need to develop a workplace culture that deals meaningfully - and in a long-term, sustained manner - with various people management facts:

  • excessive prolonged stress is now the biggest cost factor in business
  • attracting and retaining top staff is increasingly difficult in a highly competitive marketplace, and
  • quality of life is becoming a major determinant of a person's decision about where they would like to work.

To know about business management is no longer sufficient. These issues demand the professional involvement of people who understand the world outside of the working environment and can realisticaly relate the benefits and expectations of personal life interests to workplace cultures and business productivity.
