There’s a great story behind publishing Enjoy Being You back in 2001 (and by the way it’s timeless messages ensure it is still as popular today as it was in then). A senior business manager phoned me a few months after Enjoy Being You was launched. She said 1) she loved the book, 2) that she was having some real stress problems with her team of 9 professional staff and 3) could I run a workshop for them based on my book?

I confidently responded “yes”, but it was before I had established Work Leisure and until then I had never run such a workshop.  To cut the story short, I devised a workshop and the project went ahead.  Prior to the day the manager briefed me on each member of the team. She was at pains to point out there was one man who rarely had much to say socially and that he was regarded by the rest of the team as a ‘loner’.

A few days later I was invited back to their office for a brief ‘thank you’ presentation - which was only planned after the workshop ended. Who made the heartfelt presentation on behalf of the group? You guessed it. The loner - a description of whom the team subsequently never used again.
