Imagine you’re attending a live theatre show with friends. It’s interval and the inevitable question comes up: What do you think of the show so far?” This particular show is rather different and is vitally important to you - it’s called “Your Life”. You’re the star, the director, producer and script writer. What do you think of your life so far? Are you hoping the second half of the show will be as good as, or better than, the first half? It's time to remind yourself that the show has only one performance - and who knows how long it will be? It’s time to focus on the person within you, more than the world around you. But even I was debating whether to publish the following somewhat left-field paragraph in my regular emailed series "Making Life Work" Thoughts...(more) TO KEEP GOOD STAFF, LOOK AT HOW YOU KEEP GOOD CUSTOMERS When considering nature's eco-system, the whole ultimately depends absolutely on the co-operation and integration of the parts.’ This can equally be applied to a business system, the success of which depends absolutely on the co-operation and integration of its people. The system comprises all the people working for the organisation and all it customers - actual and potential. In selling to customers you research their emotional needs first and the price is secondary. In the same way, You should be researching and responding to the emotional needs of staff ...(more) BAND-AIDS DON'T CURE STRESS “The stresses of long working days are getting to Australian employees, with 25% saying they would like a plug-and-play room at work in order to partake in a bit of escapism during the work-day”, A further 25% say they would like to see “the introduction of a meditation room in the office in order to bring a bit of peace and balance back to their life”. I’m all for anything that eases workplace stress and makes life at work more enjoyable. However, putting recreation facilities into the workplace to help manage the stress of long working hours is at best a band-aid measure and, at worst, potentially harmful...(more) LOSE YOURSELF TO FIND YOURSELF - HOW PASSION UNLOCKS POTENTIAL It's after knock-off time and you're still at the office, working on a project you feel was made for you. You've become so absorbed in your thoughts and ideas and the sheer enjoyment of the experience, you haven't noticed everyone else has gone home. Your mind, body and spirit have come together as you pour your natural talents, skills and abilities into a product that only you could create. It's a feeling sometimes described as a ‘state of flow'. And it doesn't just happen at the office...(more) HARNESSING THE ENERGY OF THE FUN! Fun is perhaps our most basic natural, abundant, renewable and readily accessible form of energy. But centuries ago, the work ethic took hold, relegating this powerful force to the status of meaningless, idle frivolity. It got into bad company and was seen hanging around with undesirables known as slackers, time-wasters and malingerers. (more...)GET A LIFE!
